Locusts should be stored in a warm, dry place. A large box or tank with a tight fitting lid is suitable, although ventilation must be provided by way of perforations or by cutting a large hole and covering it with steel or plastic mesh such as fly screen. High Humidity is harmful to Locusts. The ideal temperature of 25-30 C can be maintained by mounting a suitable sized light bulb in the tank. Perching sites must be provided in the form of egg packing trays to reduce stress and cannibalism. These can be placed vertically around the sides of the tank. A source of dry food must be provided such as Progrub or failing this, bran can be used as a substitute. Fresh cabbage leaves should be provided daily. Uneaten day old leaves should be removed. Practice will teach you how much to feed in order to minimize waste.
Unpacking Livefoods
Bulk livefoods must be unpacked as soon as they arrive. The shipping container can be placed in a refrigerator for an hour or two in warm weather before unpacking to slow the livefoods down. To prevent escape, open the bag or box outdoors and tip the contents into a large plastic bucket or dustbin. Shake the livefoods off the egg carton or crumpled newspaper taking care to hold the paper below the rim of the bucket. The livefoods are then ready to be transferred to their storage container.
