Super Giant Mealworms should be stored in a warm, dark place. Exposure to temperatures below 15 C or above 28 C will kill the worms but if they are stored at the ideal temperature of 20-24C they can keep for several months. Two centimeters of peat moss makes a perfect substrate for long-term storage. Unlike regular Mealworms, high humidity is important. This can be provided by misitng the peat moss with water each day and by feeding carrot, potato or peelings. Cereal such as bran or progrub should be provided preferably in a saucer or by dusting the surface of the peat moss. The combination of high humidity and cereal may encourage mites to develop from time to time. Be prepared to wash the storage container and replace the peat moss if this happens. Smooth sided plastic containers are suitable for storage. Up to 250g can be stored in a Mealworm box. Up to 1kg can be stored in a cat litter tray.
Unpacking Livefoods
Bulk livefoods must be unpacked as soon as they arrive. The shipping container can be placed in a refrigerator for an hour or two in warm weather before unpacking to slow the livefoods down. To prevent escape, open the bag or box outdoors and tip the contents into a large plastic bucket or dustbin. Shake the livefoods off the egg carton or crumpled newspaper taking care to hold the paper below the rim of the bucket. The livefoods are then ready to be transferred to their storage container.
