Bearded Dragon Food List: Live Food Tips and Tricks

General

Beardies are amazing, awe-inspiring animals. They’re beautiful to look at, gentle and curious, and can live for 10 years or more. The oldest bearded dragon on record lived to be almost 18 years old!

Bearded dragons make excellent pets for those with a keen interest in reptiles, and committed animal lovers. They are happy to be handled, and can bond well with their keepers – but despite having a reputation for being “hardy”, or good for beginners, they need just as much care and attention as any other animal. A big part of their care comes from their diet. So, what do bearded dragons eat?

Bearded Dragon Food List

Bearded dragons are omnivores, and they love greens, fruits and vegetables just as much they like to eat insects and grubs. Young, bearded dragons need a diet that’s more insects than vegetables because they need the added protein to grow and develop.

Vegetables

Veggies should make up 25% of a young, bearded dragon’s food and half of an adult’s.  Make sure you remove any vegetables that have not been eaten so they do not go bad inside their habitat.

This is a list of safe foods for beardies that are easy to source, store and feed.

Veggies, Greens and Fruit for Bearded Dragons This isn’t an exhaustive list – beardies can eat most leafy greens and a wide variety of veggies. These are all safe bets, relatively cheap, and easy to find!

  • Watercress
  • Rocket Cress
  • Dandelions
  • Clover
  • Carrots
  • Peas
  • Butternut squash
  • Courgettes

Bearded Dragon Live Food – Tips and Tricks

Beardies need a Variety of Livefoods  Where possible, live foods should be gut-loaded with super nutritious foods, or dusted with calcium powder, See our selection of Reptile Health Products.

Live Crickets,  Nutritious and fun for beardies to hunt, Live Crickets are a cheap and delicious food for your lovable little dragon to chase down.

Live Locusts Live Locusts don’t bite and are a low escape risk. They move slower than crickets, so they’ll be caught quickly, and their big size makes a substantial meal!  Always make sure the insects you feed your beardie are no wider than their mouth.

Live Cockroaches Live Cockroaches are a good staple food for beadies. They’re big, easy to catch, and they’re cost-effective. They’re tougher than most other livefoods, but this isn’t a problem if your bearded dragon has a varied diet.

Treat foods Beardies LOVE Live Mealworms and Live Waxworms. They can’t get enough – and you should remember that when you’re feeding them! Young beardies need much more live food than adults, so they can enjoy treat foods a little more often (waxworms, with their softer bodies, might suit them better in their juvenile days); but these are to be considered as treats.

Top tip: Although they’ll most likely get all the moisture they need from their food, make sure you provide a  Water Dish for your beardie. You can also add a Jelly Pot.
